Monday, June 12, 2017: Dr. Melissa Strompolis, Children’s Trust-Adverse Childhood Experiences

MStrompolisPlease join us on Monday, June 12 when we will welcome Dr. Melissa Strompolis from Children’s Trust to our podium.  Dr. Strompolis will be speaking to us about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) and how they affect our health as adults.

Melissa Strompolis, PhD, is the Director of Research and Evaluation at Children’s Trust of South Carolina.  Through her work at Children’s Trust, she engages in program evaluation, research, and data integration to drive and improve efforts to prevent child maltreatment and improve child well-being.  Additionally, Dr. Strompolis facilitates community-based organizing and action via the South Carolina Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Initiative.

Dr. Strompolis is also an affiliate faculty member at the Institute for Families in Society in the College of Social Work and at the Yvonne & Schuyler Moore Child Development Center in the College of Education at the University of South Carolina.  She volunteers as a guardian-ad-litem for Richland County CASA in South Carolina, and was elected as a member-at-large at the Society of Community Research and Action, Division 27 of the American Psychological Association.  Locally, she leads the South Carolina State Data Team and serves on several South Carolina-based coalitions and initiatives.  Dr. Strompolis has published numerous academic papers and presented at many state, national, and international conferences.

Dr. Strompolis received her PhD in community psychology and graduate certificate in nonprofit management from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Monday, June 5, 2017: Beth Martin, SC Association of Independent Home Schools

Please join us on Monday, June 5th when we welcome Beth Martin with the SC Association of Independent Home Schools as our speaker.  Ms. Martin is the High School Director for the oldest legal homeschool accountability organization in South Carolina.  At the South Carolina Association of Independent Homeschools (SCAIHS), Beth assists parents in making homeschool dreams into a reality.  Drawing from her four years teaching middle school math in a public school and more importantly from her seventeen years homeschooling her own three children, Beth walks alongside homeschool parents and students to select the most appropriate curriculum, maintain records and transcripts, and prepare students for college and career.
